[Asterisk-Users] Basic Asterisk capabilities question

Hi Gary-

In a nutshell:

* asterisk is open-source software, you can run it on many Linux- and
Unix-variants.  See www.asterisk.org for a lot of general information, and
links to useful sites.  asterisk's main focus is to implement Voice over IP
technology, including call switching etc, but there are many other uses.  My
company, for example, specializes in large scale IVR systems .

* many people use Digium hardware (www.digium.com) when asterisk needs to
talk with the PSTN via either loop-start or PRI lines.  Digium hardware uses
the power of the host PC's processor for many of the functions that are
typically implemented on-board on other voice boards (like Dialogic).
Digium hardware is Much less expensive than Dialogic, but you have to make
sure you have the necessary horsepower in the PC.

* It's not at all a turn-key system:  you have to put the hardware and
software together yourself, or have someone do it for you.  But
straightforward applications can be put together fairly quickly by almost
anyone with some software and telephony background.

* I don't think there are Bayonne drivers for the Digium hardware, but not
sure.

* A lot of people have contributed to the site affectionately known as the

Hello, I am very new to Asterisk, so please forgive me for my basic
question.  I couldn't find a good answer to this on the info boards.  I'd
like to know if the following is possible and reasonable to accomplish:

I'd like to configure a voice recording system using Asterisk and a
Tormenta2 Quad T1 card.  A co-worker was able to create this system a while
back with Bayonne and a Dialogic card, but I would like to do the same thing
with much cheaper hardware.  I do not believe Bayonne supports the
Tormenta2. (I think it is also known as the Wildcard TE410P)

When the user dials in:
- He enters his user id
- he enters his password
- he begins his recording.
  -  while recording, he has the option to pause, continue, rewind by 4
seconds and review his recording,
  -  press a button to start another recording.
  -  press a button to recieve a recording ID number

In addition to this, I would like the user to be able to call in again later
and listen to his previous recordings by entering his recording id numbers.

So, Is this possible and resonable to accomplish with the Asterisk system?
Or is Asterisk more of an out-of-the-box PBX rather than a voice application
system?
