This is a useful read (if you can avoid the STUN/TURN/ICE bias):

I think that ideally asterisk would have the following funtionality:

- A default compliant mode (if it receives rport from UAC then asterisk
uses RFC3581 and RFC4961)
- A forced mode (even without rport from UAC asterisk uses RFC3581 and
- An auto mode (as per forced mode but only if contact address is a
private address)

Obviously this is quite different to what we have currently so some
extended phasing would be necessary
