The problem here is that a lot of (most?) people running production systems
have not been using 1.4, because for most of its life it was not robust
enough for production use. It only really approached bulletproof status
around the same time as 1.6 started entering beta!

I have not been bitten by the issue in question, but it does seem that
quite a few things are changed around or deprecated for no better reason
than "elegance" or "consistency", e.g. AMI parameters, CLI commands,
dialplan apps removed in favour of functions, etc. (but it was good to see
the recent announcement concerning the re-instatement of some dialplan apps).
