They do work, apart from one feature which has only become popular in 
the UK quite recently. Besides, nobody says you have to throw them away. 
The present patch just isn't the right way to handle. Even the original 
author thinks its a lousy solution. There are better ways. Instead of 
whining, why not try to implement one. If I did it properly, and 
submitted it to Mark, have no no doubt whatsoever it would go into CVS.
