It isn't impossible to make a asterisk-running-box in that pricerange.

Asterisk is not a end-user product. It never was intended to be. There are
people who sell asterisk-based solutions, and they decide the price-range
they want to sell it at. I doubt they consider Epigy or whatever as a
threat.
