[Asterisk-Users] ringback tone or signal on the phone somehow?

Is anyone aware of a method to signal back to a caller that the party
they have called is on another call (other than the obvious ->send to VM
or a busy signal).
What I am thinking of is the alternate ring you get when you call
someone on various cellular networks or PSTN networks where the calls
rings different if it is ringing as call waiting.
The environment that I am working with in this case is
Asterisk<>SIP<>Polycom.
I realize the ringing that you here when you call another party from a
SIP phone is generated locally, so this would require some type of sip
response that indicates to the phone that it should ring differently. Is
there such a sip response?
If so, one would also have to be able to determine if the called sip
peer is engaged in a call, Is the "presence" (aka hint) status readable
as a variable, in other words can you check the status of a peer from
the dialplan?
The flow would have to look something like this I assume
1. check peer status
2. set ringback tone if the status is "inuse"
3. dial, using the alternate ringback status?
Is this possible with current asterisk code and Polycom firmware?
