All right, installed Asterisk @ home and sat up DHCP as per described in the
handbook.
Defined a subnet with the Asterisk box at 192.168.1.1 as you can see in the
dhcpd.conf quoted below. Chmod'ed all files in the /tftpboot directory to
666, the directory itself to 777. However, still nothing but Protocol
Application invalid. Below is also a quote from the /var/log/messages file:
--- /var/log/messages ---
Aug 27 14:44:57 asterisk1 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:06:d7:e5:c3:03

Aug 27 14:44:58 asterisk1 dhcpd: Unable to add forward map from

--- END ---

}
--- END ---
The option-tftp-boot-server suggested previously fails with this version of
dhcp as an invalid option.
I'll admit I'm lost here, but haven't given up. Thanks for the help so far!

Bjorn,
Save yourself the trouble with the console cable. Take a spare PC,
install Asterisk at Home, setup the included DHCP server, install the
appropriate files in the /tftpboot directory, and plug the PC and the
phone into the same switch.
Voila!
