Were your problem debian installs with a 2.6.X kernel?

No, except to say that this sounds exactly the same as the problem I
posted about earlier today. Except I did a fairly basic debian install.
Oh, and that was the second machine I have had that problem on, the
other was a pretty full install of debian (x windows, gnome, etc... yeah
I know, X is bad but I was just playing around with some old bits of
hardware)...
