I gave up before I reached that point! A quick change of hardware (from a
SiS based mobo to an nVidia one) did the trick. No other changes (apart from
the ethernet driver) and a unplug and plug of the original hard drive and
it's working like a charm.

Now, should I investigate the SiS problem, or just make a mental note not to
bother using SiS kit in future?
