[Asterisk-Users] Mitel 5010 +5220

My take on this is that Mitel doesn't know internally how they are going to
play out interoperability since they have a vested interest in keeping users
locked in with MiNet. Of course, lock-in is anathema to the *whole point* of
a VoIP system, so this, to me, is a stupid business decision and the
fundadmental reason why I am going to replace my 3300 with *. Mitel, IMNSHO,
should just deal with interoperability, work with everybody, and focus on
making a great box that is more solid than their competitors.
ARE YOU LISTENING MITEL?
PS a 5220 costs me $1200 Cdn with licences. A Snom costs me $350 Cdn with no
licensing nessisary. <sarcasm>Which one would you choose?</sarcasm>

I have had many conflicting conversations with Mitel dealers, resellers and
executives, they don't seem to know what they want to do. At one point they
say they will be releasing a full line of easily configurable SIP phones,
then they take that back, then they say they will be backward compatible
with existing SIP released phones, then they take that back. All I can say
is that I have been less than impressed with my Mitel SIP phone that I have
had for the last year overall and would much rather buy a Snom or Polycom
instead of Mitel in the future for the same price.

I know this is not strictly an asterisk issue but it is related I guess.
Just to let you know that after many calls to Mitel the consensus is that
they will be releasing a new version of the 5220 that is dual boot (minet
and SIP) next week or the week after. This firmware will only appear on NEW
phones manufactured after the release date (no one could confirm but the
23rd of sept was mentioned).
When asked if Mitel will ever plan to bring out an updated firmware for
existing phones they said they had no plans, so when I said "so does that
mean you will never bring out a downloadable firmware upgrade" the answer
was "never say never!" (very annoying!)
To configure the new phones you have to press and HOLD the up arrow whilst
plugging in the power/ethernet, you should then get the option to select
SIP.
will let you know how I get on with the 5220 with asterisk as and when I get
my phone :-)
