With Asterisk one can be pretty sure things will work OK on CVS-HEAD. 
That has been my experience, and I know of lots, lots, lots, and lots of 
people who use it in production.

With most other packages it's probably not a good idea, but the risk is 
miniscule in Asterisk, AT LEAST IN MY EXPERIENCE.
