100% agreed. My neighbors could do just as much harm as somebody on the
other side of the world.
Rule 1 - Read the rules carefully for paypal and credit card merchant
accounts you have.
Rule 2 - Never risk funds you need to operate.
Suppose you take a local check and use a check guarantee service. First
thing to consider is that some of those services have a maximum amount
they will guarantee. Second thing to consider is the delay involved in
finally getting the funds. So assume that they will guarantee a $10k
check which turns out to be bad. Assume that it takes at least a month
to get the $10k. What impact would it have on your business?
I welcome international clients. I will take the risks I can afford to
take. Beyond that it's usually a matter of western union or wire
transfer confirmed by my bank. The only advantage locals have is that
they can also pay with cash or gold :)
What it comes down to is that if I'm in the mood to do 20 hours work on
credit for a new customer, I won't discriminate as long as they can
communicate in english or spanish. Anybody else has to pay the translator.
