Finally, the idea of a global VoIP emergency network ignores one vital
component, politics. While the order pending at the FCC may be about
public safety, once you start talking about replacing PSAPs and 911
operations, politics become very important. You aren't battling the
ILECs, you are battling the PSAPs. I
At first I thought this was what Jeremy was saying also. But I think what
he is really talking about is just creating a separate entity that does all
the necessary interconnects according to what is mandated by the FCC. Kind
of like a cooperative of a sort, or an OnCall for voip. At least that's how
I understood it after reading it through as second time.
If he was talking about some type of parallel 911 network, then no that
would never happen. The FCC would move to I-3 before allowing something
like that.
And although it's easy for voip providers to concentrate on the business
aspects of 911, to politicians and the people running the PSAP's, it's all
about public safety. You have to tread very carefully when talking about
the business side, even though it's a completely legitimate issue.
