g723 is supported by Asterisk. I've never used it, but it shows up with 
the "show codecs" command.

Because you don't have a g729 codec?

You may want to rethink this. G.729 licenses are only $10 per channel. Can 
you replace the instrument and retrain your users for $10 each?

That would depend on how you interface to the PSTN.
