I first learned asterisk via A at H.
Then I went to straight asterisk.
For production, I am using a heavily modified FreePBX on asterisk.
The reasons:
Easier for other staff to add, edit, support extensions and users via the gui.
CDR records and gui voicemail for users. (I know, this is avail. without freepbx as well via straight ARI)
Many of the macros have some decent functionality, although I have modified most of them.

But, can't it be one way of "learning"? Can't one setup and modify
a Trixbox setup, then peruse the conf files, to get familiar with
(almost) all things Asterisk?
Spoke as one who was not very pleased with their own foray into Trixbox
and is still creeping up to speed on Asterisk.
