I think you are overestimating hardware-related downtime compared to
software-related. So far software/configuration causes more downtime
here than hardware.
Admittedly, the only serious hardware issue was probably when we lost
a switch port. Luckily most of our equipment is connected redundantly,
so downtime was just a few seconds until the failure was detected.
A CPU or a memory board going bad could knock us out for a bit longer,
but then a switch to the hot spare should get us going -- hopefully
within minutes.
I would love to have load-balancing on the customer-facing PBX's
though. The only true redundancy is load-balancing -- if it isn't in
regular service, you can't be completely sure that it will work when
the time comes. Perhaps one day asterisk will be able to store
everything about registrations in an SQL database.
