This does not involve the PSTN. The problem is that if I press a digit on the telephone, the asterisk generated dial tone should go away. (The digits are not be forwarded anywhere at this point) The dial tone does go away most of the time, but not all of the time. Asterisk is not consistently recognising that a digit was pressed. And yes I have tried different phones and ports. By changing the audio volume, I can get better recognition.
I don't believe the dial tone volume is the root cause of the problem but if it can help so asterisk does not miss so many dialed digits, it would sure help. This is a live system and users are not very happy. I can't say that I blame them. These dialing issues began when we installed external echo cancellers.

The problem with changing txgain is that it changes the volume of the audio path. Phone conversations will not be loud enough when I reduce the dial tone volume.
