Are you sure your LEC is sending you "disconnect supervision" on the 
line?  That's the only way *anybody's* cards are going to know if the 
other party is gone, and quite a few carriers don't provide it.

Like mine.

They have an almost-new switch, and I called them when I realized what 
was going on to see if they could turn it on that feature for me.

"Nope.  Go away," was the response.  Monopoly, you see; it doesn't 
matter what the customer wants/needs, ILECs give them what they feel 
like giving them.

I have a fantasy that someday in the near future, after VoIP has 
provided true local loop competition even out here in Hooterville, I'll 
run into the local telco folks, now down on their luck.  In my vision 
they'll be sitting on the street corner selling pencils.

And I'll spit in their cups.
