Actually, the first place that zaptel checks is
/lib/modules/<kver>/build (a symlink, not a directory).

Debian, RH, and probably some other distros generate that link. I'm not
sure if a normal kernel tree 'make install' does it as well. So I would
not call that "distro specific".

Florz's patch aims at correcting code, and not build system.
