I'm using the Varion boards with no problem.
Now, about echo...
Sagnoma says if YOU have echo, it is THEIR problem and they will fix it.

I am using asterisk 1.2.4 and zaptel 1.2.3. Also, I tried the latest
zaptel out of subversion.
