[Asterisk-Users] Unable to connect to remote asterisk (does / var/run/asterisk.ctl exist?)

I ran strace and got this:
open("/var/run/asterisk.pid", O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_TRUNC, 0666) = -1
EACCES (Permission denied)
open("/etc/localtime", O_RDONLY)        = 3
Unable to open pid file '/var/run/asterisk.pid': Permission denied

/var/run has root:root permissions.
