Run "dmesg".  Do you see something like:

Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- you can enable it with "lapic"

If so, there may be something in your bios.  Or try appending 'lapic' to 
your kernel boot parameters in grub / lilo.  'lapi' will try to override 
the bios setting and use io-apic.

My results have been mixed.  On older machines using 'lapic' as a kernel 
boot parameter produces a message in dmesg that indicates it is 
overriding bios, but I still only get XT-APIC.
