Actually, he did not. He did the proper thing and posted a new message.

Unlike what people think, when you want to post a new message to the
list about a new subject you don't just reply to an existing message and
change the subject. Doing so leaves that message with references to the
old thread and buries it in its bottom. Thus less people will see it as
"new" and bother answering to it.
