I currently use AudioGrabber (http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/) with
LAME and set to CBR.  It's worked for me for many years...

It certainly is - I too noticed that it also complained about the sample
files, supplied with Asterisk.  madplay doesn't seem to complain but I
think it uses a bit more CPU.
