I'm not really surprised, given what UML does.

You (and some of the others using UML or XEN) ought to try VServer:
http://www.linux-vserver.org/.  It should give you native access to the
device.

We have had good luck with it for a wide range of activities, and if
you've got a Linux host and want Linux virtual machines, it is probably
the best way to go.
