That's all true.  I assumed that the SPA-3000 would make a direct
connection when asked, but it seems that it goes via an internal route
and uses G.711.

The original poster should find some other way to connect their modem
to the phone line - perhaps by getting a dedicated line or using ISDN
instead of analogue.  DSL will work too.  I imagine this all depends
upon whether the modem is used to connect to an ISP, or to some sort of
dedicated service (with no inet link) somewhere.
