I paused myself when I saw this. 

The generic /etc/init.d/zaptel (that you get if you do make config)  
tries to load
  wct4xxp, wct1xxp, wcfxo, wcfxs,  and wcusb

Paring  down the list to just wcfxo generates exactly the same problems.
