My comment wasn't about ENUM at all.
I said: *some* universal directory facility, ie ENUM
you're welcome to replace ENUM with <fill in your
preferred facility here>
The point was that the proliferation of VoIP in
combination with a universal service independent directory
will eventually turn telephony into an all peer-to-peer
affair rendering SIP's touted virtues pretty much
obsolete.
SIP design reminds me of restaurant cars on the bullet
train service.
Here in Japan, they have the bullet train which can reach
speeds of up to 400 kph. Some years ago, Japan Railways
abandoned the restaurant car on the bullet train because
of declining demand.
In hindsight this would seem logical. After all the bullet
train is one of the icons of todays fast pace jet set age
while restaurant cars represent a bygone era of a much
slower pace.
Yet the bullet train designers put restaurant cars on the
bullet train simply because there have been restaurant
cars on long distance train services for over a hundred
years. They didn't think that the bullet train would be
part of an evolution that would ultimately lead to
travellers prefer a sushi lunch box rather than visiting
the restaurant car.
Most of the features that SIP proponents tout as most
sophisticated are like those restaurant cars, which were
most sophisticated in their time, too. Just as the market
decided that a sushi lunch box is more sophisticated in
this day and age, it will most likely decide that third
party call control and other such artifacts of the PSTN
era will be out.
So, to come back to your question of why to choose IAX
over SIP despite not having any requirement for NAT
traversal, I say, why bother with SIP if you have a choice
not to, why fight the change, why not embrace the future
today, why not use IAX right away.
