I'm sure there is.  But I have been unable to find the documentation for it.

I can only assume that when I deleted  a previous last message, the flag 
wasn't changed.

Is this a coding issue ???

Shouldn't there be a check to see if there are new messages before the flag is 
set ???  ie. atomic
