This is not the whole truth about H.323 and Asterisk.
For all these people who don't know the real facts,
if they look in the archives of the Asterisk mailing-list,
they will discover that the first standard-based (ITU-T)
VoIP support for Asterisk was asterisk-oh323 (H.323 channel
driver). Of course, that first attempt was something very
premature and had limited funcionality, but since then it has
been improved in many ways. "asterisk-oh323" is still distributed
and actively maintained by inAccess Networks, and we believe it
to be a better implementation than chan_h323. The reason that
asterisk-oh323 was not included in the asterisk source tree is that
we were reluctant to assign its copyright to Digium. Nevertheless,
asterisk-oh323 is free software distributed under the GPL.
Some months since the original announcement of our h323 support package,
McNamara sent a mail to the Asterisk's
list saying that he had made his own H.323 channel driver.
Well, guess what? He edited the original channel driver,
with no major improvements (how can anyone consider source code refacing
as an impovement??) and presented it as his own work.
He never submitted patches, fixes, or
suggestions for improvement of asterisk-oh323. He decided to fork the
project from day one. If anyone were to compare the
sources of the two channel drivers, he would see that there are
still great portions that are common.
As a "thanks" to the authors of the *original* asterisk H.323 channel
driver, McNamara removed all the copyright notices from the source
files.
Well done! Great job!
Michael.
