[Asterisk-Users] does * support digest authentication of sip clients

i have tried to make a sip ua to authenticate with * using digest
authentication, but * does not respond to register request from the ua
with 401 that would include a

WWW-Authenticate: Digest ...

header.  is * supposed to support digest authentication or am i missing
something? i have the ua listed in my sip.conf like this:

type=friend
username=foo
secret=bar
host=dynamic
dtmfmode=inband         ; Choices are inband, rfc2833, or info
context=intern
