Tom.

You are absolutely right - chan_ss7 is nicely written code.
I started working on a ANSI / ITU capable version of it quite a while 
ago but didn't have time to finish it.
I have patched sources for V0.30 which have implementations for ansi 
pointcodes, ulaw audio codecs and the different ISUP layout.

Anyone who would like to continue the work on it and port the patches to 
the current version - please email me - I'll send you the source.
