Workaround failed after moving to asterisk 1.6.2 (pre). pbx_ael.so loads
after pbx_config.so at asterisk startup, and thus I'm left with a
DLPN_Dialplan1 context that only has my "custom" extensions.

This is not the case after a reload, interestingly enough.

Anyway, I resorted to add the custom stuff inside [pagegroups], as I
don't really need it right now and editing it does not remove my custom
stuff. However my custom stuff serves to hide all the page groups I add
from the list in the GUI. I wonder if this is considered a bug.
