Some ideas:

- Not directly Asterisk, but related: rewrite iaxmodem to support SIP 
and T.38 (for those people which do not want Asterisk internal faxing 
but want to rely on hylafax)

- small project: program some video tools to convert between Asterisk's 
internal video file format and standard video formats (mp4, mkv, avi, 3gp)

- support or pass-through media (raw/digital) - never ever transcode it

- SIP instant messaging

- SRTP

- integration of video conferencing tools (e.g. MCU Media Server)

- new extension patterns (digits, alhanumeric) to replace . and ! to 
avoid dialplan injection (see mailing list discussions)

- new dialplan extensions with purely regexp patterns
