There are not any legal concerns here, even if they had not published a
specification.  We can reverse engineer and implement protocols all we want.  We
have chan_skinny and chan_unistim, both implemented without released
specifications.  For an even more significant example, see the history of the
samba project ...

You would only need their help if you wanted access to an unpublished
specification.  However, that has nothing to do with letting us implement it.
