thanks for the fix.
gcc 2.95 (used on FreeBSD 4.11) has the same problem.
When the fix is not is too hard, there is a good reason
to try and remain compatible with old compilers (and old OS versions),
because the latter tend to be much leaner in terms of resource
usage, and as a consequence more suitable for embedded / single
board computer / low performance systems.
