I assume you have some knowledge of C programming.

Your starting point is http://asterisk.org/developers .

For starters, make sure you can build and install the asterisk version
from the svn trunk:

  http://asterisk.org/developers/get-source

There is also http://asterisk.org/developers/getting-started but I see
too many irrelevant and/or obsolete things in it.

Make sure you have a testing system with Asterisk installed on it. If
you don't have any hardware phones, you can use the software VoIP phones
(SIP/IAX) and/or the console alsa/oss channel support.

One possible task is to add support for Arabic to say.c, app_voicemail.c
and maybe some other places. I'm not sure it is a trask worthy of a
semesterial project, but will certainly get you familiar with many
aspects of Asterisk.
