Softswitch just switches calls, generally, it doesn't even include things
like conferencing, etc. In other words, softswitch does not molest audio
traffic (except to do codec conversion). Asterisk by design *has* to touch
the audio (witness the crude SIP hacks to make REINVITE/REFER work), and
most "applications" go beyond call routing.
