it doesn't cost much anyways to provide function pointers
to map the say* functions to different implementations,
and it will help a lot people to move gradually to the
new code as they see fit.

if this is a 'go ahead' for the config-based implementation,
i am happy to work with a committer (oej ? crichter ?
the preference would go to someone in europe given
the timezone issues) to implement this.
