2. ...
3. Get it included in SVN (Submit to bugtracker)

The problem that has existed in the past has been that there needs to be 
backwards compatibility.

I saw a post somewhere about using the version number in the manager to 
specify different (i.e. compatability breaking) formats.

Ideally this would be done with the ability to re-negotiate to an 
earlier protocol spec if possible thereby not breaking currently 
existing apps.

The other option I guess would be to specify an extra parameter in the 
login detailing your need for a different format.  That way you could 
send it one way or the other depending on the flag.

Shouldn't really be too hard to code,  but I'm not even sure you 
wouldn't be reinventing the wheel as there has been a bit of discussion 
about the manager lately.
