I have already made this change in SVN trunk; it will no longer bypass a
one-step conversion from the source to the destination format and will
only use SLINEAR as an intermediate step when the path contains more
than one step. This can still cause SLINEAR to be used when it is not
strictly needed (in the bizarre case of "codec A" -> "codec B" -> "codec
C" where none of them are SLINEAR), but the likelihood of that is very
small.
