I doubt very much that Digium said "well gee, I dunno.  You're on your own 
there..."

What exactly did they say and suggest, and did you follow the suggestions?  
Personally it sounds like your telco's provisioned their PRI with a 
switchtype that libpri doesn't understand, or there's a bug in libpri.
