Try finding the open statement for this filehandle 31, it must appear
earlier in the output of strace.
Looking at where this filehandle wants to write to might give you a clue
what's going on (File, Socket, Pipe, ...).

Since I don't know the asterisk code from the inside, I can't give a
guess, what it might be.
