No and Yes.
No it isn't safe to apply *any* patch to the stable branch, because by
doing so, you are making the system less 'stable'. You are adding
un-tested code to a tested system.
Yes, it will cause trouble, because each time you upgrade to a new
stable release, you will need to track and apply your customised patch,
and make sure that your un-tested patch doesn't interact differently
with this new stable version than the old one. Also, if you have any
problems, you will need to remove your patch, and then re-test to see if
you still have the problem, before reporting it as a bug, since it is
hard to say whether your patch caused the problem in the first place.
Stable is for stable, CVS-HEAD is for testing. Don't confuse the issues.
IMHO, you would be better off converting your mp3 files to gsm files,
and then use those with a CVS stable/1.0 version.
Though that is just my 0.02c worth, what you do is your choice.
