And what makes you think anyone else posting regularly here isn't also
spending the same amount of time on software to make a living? Part of
my salary comes from asterisk related projects. Many of the other
developers here are making a living either by supporting asterisk or by
using it themselves.
Getting up to speed is all a matter of how well you can juggle the code
in your own head. The code is also sometimes the most efficient way to
explain what is going on.
