While speaking for myself only, it isn't usually a concern about who is
chased away. Open source software is a labor of love. If you love
something enough to be interested in hanging around, you wouldn't have
been put off by the comment. If you could be put off by the comment,
then you are less likely to make a dent in the community one way or
another.

If you are willing to not worry so much about little rough things, you
will be more likely to be accepted.
