[Asterisk-Dev] How do you debug Asterisk?

I need to debug an application I've written for Asterisk and I'm looking 
for some guidance on the best approach.

I'm using gdb in emacs.

How do you set breakpoints in the code? Do you set a breakpoint in the 
module loader and then set the breakpoint after your module is loaded? Do 
you link a "monotlithic" executable?

Inquiring minds want to know :)
