i can vouch for this, having been bitten by a misconfiguration error on 
my part where i mistyped the local host's ip address in /etc/hosts. 
asterisk kept responding to SIP clients with a Contact: header using 
this wrong IP addy, and the SIP clients tried sending packets back to a 
non-existent IP addy.
