You could look for the existence of /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build just like it looks for /usr/src/linux-2.6 today.

If people were only using Fedora Core3 with Asterisk, that would be an easy
patch to make. However, many people are using other distributions. You'd
have to ensure that your fix worked on all of them, or else this just wouldn't
be practical.
