[Asterisk-Dev] non-root asterisk install

any ideas what needs to be changed to run asterisk as non-root.  ive 
searched the archives and theres some discussion way back in the past about 
how asterisk was only originally root because of something called the VoFR 
interface?

id really like to try and get asterisk installing under a specific user 
(asterisk) to stop having to give out root access to my machines for people 
to get console access and to reduce the risk of accidental damage (most 
notably, messing up /etc/modules.conf by accident instead of 
/etc/asterisk/modules.conf (this has happened several times now... doh)).

anyone got asterisk running as non-root right now?  any pointers on the 
best way to get it done?
